allez, roule

nannies strolling their small charges, ciel gris. woman in a furry hat yells at someone she mistakenly thinks she recognizes, she is rebuffed with a look of scathing disapproval. the rain spits down with only a modicum of insistence as though knocking on the door before he thinks he'll be welcome. come in if you mean it, i want to yell, bring the spring with you, for chissakes. middle aged man will not let me hold the door for him at the post office: je vous en prie mademoiselle, he says, and waits for me to pass first. i find it dumb then, i find it dumb now. if he had been there first and held it for me, okay fine, i get that. but hurry your ass up if you're about to play the gentleman. on gentlemanly behavior: nothing is better than taking the street side of the sidewalk. no one does that anymore. that's the important one, the unsung one, the quiet one that doesn't brag about itself.
