girl, head on a pin

one hot afternoon.
real size girl, does real size things,
hotly.
real size book in hot little hands, head on a pin
in the come down sun.

no shade day.
day of tired, open-mouthed horses,
big-eyed horses under thick black lids,
frothing,
from thick black lips.

melt down hot day.
where the post men don't come,
where no trucks start.
straw sticks on thick limbed beasts,
on our sweat slick cheeks and necks.
low flies moan dazed circles under
low birds,
perched heavy on fences.

one hot afternoon
where the book lies in the hot-eyed gaze
of no-one's girl

no post card,
no letter,
no mouth,
no lips,

just a head on a pin
in the come down sun.
